Cybercriminals are known for constantly finding new ways to get hold of login details or sensitive data. Although you may think your team could spot an attempted attack, many intelligent people, including high-ranking business leaders, have been caught out.
One of the latest scams is so many people out.
Cybercriminals have returned to basics and are sending USBs in the post. The packaging and branding on the USB suggest they’re from Microsoft. The information enclosed claims the USB contains an updated Microsoft Office Professional Plus version that must be uploaded immediately.
If you plug the USB into your computer, it will detect a “virus” and ask you to call a support line. The scammers at the other end will pretend to remove the virus, gaining your trust. They will then ask for payment details to help complete your subscription setup.
Microsoft officials have confirmed that this is a complete scam. They say they understand how such an old-fashioned approach might appear genuine and compelling, especially with the fake support line. When we’re busy, this approach can catch us with our guard down. But Microsoft is informing people they would never send out unsolicited packages.
This could be an excellent time to review the software you use to protect your business and your staff training schedule. But in the meantime, be sure to warn everyone in your business about this scam.
